In 1997, Apple, on the verge of bankruptcy, ousted its CEO and invited Steve Jobs back. Although he founded Apple, Jobs had been away for 11 years, and had an outsider’s perspective. The rest is history.

Higher ed, and especially Christian higher ed, have entered troubled waters: decreasing enrollments, deficit spending, and consolidations and closures — all things indicative of a mature and declining life cycle. Yet, we are trying to solve new problems with old solutions that no longer work, and practicing Einstein’s definition of insanity: “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” It’s time to look to successful organizations such as Apple, Chrysler, and FedEx for ideas on how we can turn things around.
